With gross domestic product in excess of 25 states combined, the pace of California’s recovery has far-reaching consequences for America’s future. After 2008, California helped lead the country in economic growth and job creation, powered by Silicon Valley, which remains relatively resilient. But this time the pain is shared in a much broader sector of the economy, including rotten strawberries in fields along the Pacific coast, empty Napa Valley wine tasting rooms and deserted campuses of the largest public university system in the country.
