On Monday, Ben Stiller announced the sad news that his father, comedy legend Jerry Stiller, died at 92 from natural causes. The actor was known for playing hilarious fathers on screen for both “King of Queens” and “Seinfeld”, but according to co-stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander, some of Stiller’s funniest moments happened behind the scenes.
As recently as last week, as “Seinfeld” alumni Louis-Dreyfus and Alexander were raising funds for Direct Relief on Instagram Live, the couple took time to remember Stiller and one of the bloopers most famous of “Seinfeld”.
“Someone wants to know, can you talk about filming [the] “Want a piece of me” with Jerry Stiller? Said Louis-Dreyfus to Alexandre, making them both laugh.
The scene in question, which involves Stiller, Alexander and Louis-Dreyfus, spawned a very popular blooper “Seinfeld” on YouTube, which to date has garnered around 2 million views. In the scene, Alexander and Louis-Dreyfus simply cannot stay with Stiller:
Alexander recalled that Stiller still knew his lines but was not sure that he knew his lines, which caused a lot of “internal rage” for his character, Frank Costanza, as well as his hilarious readings.
Louis-Dreyfus added that a funny gesture that Stiller made when he looked up at the sky was in fact just trying to remember the lines.
“He made this sentence in the first take of you saying:” You want a piece of me! “And you did exactly what you do now,” said Alexander as Louis-Dreyfus cracked. “And I have to tell you that when you leave, very few people have the stamina not to accompany you. “
“From that first reading, it just made us laugh,” said Alexander. “And you … you couldn’t face it. I mean, there’s an outlet where you laugh, I fall off the bench I was sitting on. “
Louis-Dreyfus also posted the clip on Instagram in tribute to Stiller, writing: “He was so funny and such a dear human being. “
