Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars film

Taika Waititi, Academy Award® winner, who recently won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award for Jojo rabbit and directed the final episode of the highly acclaimed first season of The Mandalorian on Disney +, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for a theatrical release.

Oscar-nominated Krysty Wilson-Cairns to join Waititi on screenplay (1917, last night in Soho), which received the BAFTA award for best British film of the year for the Oscar-winning triple film, 1917.

In addition, Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland (Russian doll, Bachelorette) is currently developing a new Star Wars series for Disney +. Headland will write, produce executive products and act as showrunner for the series, adding to a growing list Star Wars stories for the Disney streaming platform including The Mandalorian, now in post-production on season two, and two other previously announced series: one based on the life of Cassian Andor before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and another sequel to the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A new hope.

The release dates for the Waititi and Headland projects have yet to be announced.
