The New Orleans Saints have positioned themselves so that Taysom Hill appears to be the waiting quarterback when Drew Brees chooses to withdraw from the game. But with Hill being essentially a gadget player in his first three seasons in New Orleans and having only attempted 13 assists in regular season games, it is understandable to wonder if Hill is capable of the job for which he was penciled in a post-Brees era with the Saints.
Saints head coach Sean Payton understands that Hill’s skill for this job will be questioned by those who cannot see him play the quarterback on a regular basis. But in an interview with 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore on Thursday, Payton said they had supreme confidence in what Hill was capable of becoming a quarterback in the NFL.
” For those who are not sold, it’s probably because they didn’t see enough of him in the games and I can certainly understand that, ”said Payton, via Luke Johnson of New Orleans Lawyer. “Now having said that, we’ve seen hundreds of reps that weren’t necessarily regular season games and we’ve seen some of the things we think he can do on a consistent basis.
“This is often the case with any new player, which means that when the time comes for Taysom to move into the quarterback position only, people are excited or impatient to see, hey, how is this guy working up and down at this position?
“We think he will be a great quarterback in the NFL. He’s a very good athlete. But I think this is a normal reaction for any fan compared to someone who is about to play this position and they have not had the same number of shots to watch. “
Hill has completed just six of 13 attempts for 119 yards with an interception in the past two seasons. He had the most success as a ball carrier and catcher, carrying the ball 64 times on 352 yards and three touchdowns over the same period. He also caught 19 passes for 234 yards and six touchdowns last year for New Orleans.
Hill completed 36 of 49 passes for 365 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the 2018 preseason and finished 40 of 59 for 443 yards with three touchdowns and one interception last August for the Saints.
