Chicago Bears will not take fifth-year option on quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s rookie contract, says NFL networkIt’s Tom Pelissero.

The decision means that Trubisky is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season.

Trubisky is the very last choice among the first five in the 2017 draft to have declined his option, because only Myles Garrett was taken over by the Cleveland Browns.

Trubisky, 25, was the first quarterback selected in the 2017 draft, with the Bears swapping places to select North Carolina as the pivot. Trubisky’s selection, however, has received much criticism in recent years, as Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson were subsequently selected, 10th and 12th, respectively.

General manager Ryan Pace largely bet his reputation on Trubisky when he swapped places with San Francisco to pick him up ahead of Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City and Deshaun Watson of Houston. While Mahomes and Watson emerged as two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Trubisky mixed promising flashes with too many bad decisions and shots. And he faces a bleak future in Chicago.

Chicago lacked playmakers to complete catcher Allen Robinson and got little production from its tight ends. He fixed that problem by signing Jimmy Graham five times as Pro Bowl’s end position in March and by drafting Notre Dame’s Cole Kmet in the second round last month.

Trubisky had a generally tough rookie campaign in 2017, but played better in 2018 under new head coach Matt Nagy as the Bears went 12-4 (11-3 with Trubisky under the center) and Chicago posted -season for the first time since 2010 However, Trubisky and the Bears regressed in 2019, ending outside the playoffs with a record of 8-8 and an offense that ranked 25th out of 32.

In response, the Bears acquired Nick Foles, the MVP for the Super Bowl LII, in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars this off-season and said the two quarters will fight for the starting point next season.

As mentioned above, Pelissero reports that the bears were impressed with Trubisky’s response to the acquisition of Foles.
