On the day of his wedding, Prince Edward was created Earl of Wessex by the Queen, while his wife Sophie became Countess of Wessex.

However, Edward had rejected a duchy of the queen, breaking with a tradition according to which the sons of the sovereign were created royal dukes.

It is said to be because Edward loved the character Lord Wessex from the movie Shakespeare in Love, so his mother humored him and granted him the title of Earl of Wessex.

As a result, the Queen, through a press release from Buckingham Palace, announced that the children of Sophie and Edward, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn would be called the children of an Earl, rather than the prince or the princess.
