Recall of a rapid test for COVID-19 after Health Canada expressed its concerns

A rapid test developed for COVID-19 suffered a setback.

Spartan Bioscience of Ottawa has stated that it is voluntarily recalling its product COVID-19 and is carrying out additional studies after Health Canada expressed its concerns on Friday.

Spartan says Health Canada was concerned about “the effectiveness of the exclusive swab” for the product tested. The company says Health Canada was not concerned with the accuracy and analytical performance of the product.

Health Canada states that the product is for research use only until sufficient evidence of clinical performance can be provided.

The federal government announced that it had approved the portable DNA analyzer on April 13.

The need for further testing is widely recognized as the key to understanding the true scope of COVID-19 infection in Canada and the best way to deploy suppression strategies.
