Investigators believe that a second, unidentified man, who was found dead in his car, shot and killed Liu at home before returning to his car and committing suicide.
Police believe the men knew each other, but say there is “no indication that there was targeting because of his (Liu) being Chinese,” said Detective Sgt. Brian Kohlhepp.
The university released a statement in which it was “deeply saddened by the tragic death of Pitt’s prolific researcher and admired colleague Bing Liu. The University expresses its sincere condolences to Liu’s family, friends and colleagues during these difficult times. “
Members of the university’s medical school describe their former colleague as an exceptional researcher and mentor and are committed to completing Liu’s research “in order to honor his scientific excellence.”
