Gardening presenter Monty Don has announced the death of his doggy co-star Nigel.

The face of Gardeners ‘World, the BBC’s horticultural show, shared a heartbreaking post saying that his” charming “friend was” suddenly “taken and put his puppy to rest in his garden.

He said on social media, “Until the end, he was happy, healthy, and he was calm and charming.

“He slipped quietly without pain or suffering and is buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.

“Rest now old friend. Goodbye and goodbye. “

Nigel, 11, appeared on BBC Two’s Gardeners ’World as he and his golden retriever companion Nellie followed Monty.

He became so popular that he even had his own Twitter account.

Monty once wrote about how Nigel overshadowed him, saying, “He creeps into every scene, sidelining me to become his straight man. “

Nigel’s last resting place is in the garden of Monty’s Herefordshire’s house next to those of the companion dogs Beaufort, Red, Poppy and Barry – and the cats Stimpy and Blue.

The star made sure everyone had their own gravestone.

The writer and broadcaster, who said he dreamed of being a rock star, grew up in Hampshire where he became a gardening enthusiast and farmer.

He now lives in Ivington, Herefordshire, where Monty presents Gardeners ‘World of his own garden.

It was at Cambridge University that he met the future wife, Sarah, who then trained as a jeweler.

The couple have three children, two sons Adam and Tom and a daughter Freya.

He has gardened on television for over twenty years and acted in This Morning.

Other roles included the presentation of Real Gardens and Fork to Fork from Channel 4.

He has also written articles on gardening for national newspapers.
