CBS – the American television network owner of the Star Trek franchise – announced on Friday that a new series devoted to the days leading up to Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise is underway.
And fans of Star Trek: Discovery will have already met some of the actors in the form of Marvel star Anson Mount as captain Christopher Pike, Disney actor Ethan Peck as legendary science officer Spock and the Beauty of X-Men Rebecca Romijn as first officer, number one.
The new show is set to be called Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and will see the Enterprise crew explore the galaxy and, naturally, discover strange new worlds.
“Fans fell in love with the portraits of Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck of these iconic characters when they were first featured on Star Trek Discovery last season,” said Julie McNamara, director of programming EVP and CBS All Access at Deadline.
“This new series will be a perfect addition to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and a series of adventures to Star Trek,” they added.
The spin-off will be a treat for fans who have campaigned for a spin-off on the Anson front since he and Ethan and Rebecca played in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery last year.
Sharing his joy at the announcement of the new show, Anson said, “I have never received more love from a fan base than I have from the Star Trek family.”
He continued: “It means even more for us to announce that we are able to present this show now at a time when so much of the planet is suffering. “
He added, “And we’re going to be working on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future. “
Ethan told the fans, “Without you, this wouldn’t happen, so thank you very much. “
While Rebecca was gushing, “I can’t wait to put on this golden Starfleet uniform. “
The show’s official synopsis states: “The series will follow Captain Pike, Scientific Officer Spock, and number one in the decade before Captain Kirk was taken aboard the USS Enterprise, as they explore new worlds across the galaxy. “
Created by the late Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s, Star Trek was originally intended to introduce Captain Christopher Pike in charge of the Enterprise spacecraft – with a pilot episode starring Jeffery Hunter in the title role before the series be rewritten and re-filmed to present Canadian actor William Shatner as Kirk.
Bruce Greenwood played Pike in the 2009 and 2013 films Star Trek and Star Trek: In To Darkness, while Anson took over the role in 2019.
The late Leonard Nimmoy played Spock in the original Star Trek series and eight films, while Zachary Quinto assumed the role of Star Trek in 2009, In To Darkness in 2013 and Star Trek: Beyond in 2016, Ethan assuming the role. in 2019.
And the late Majel Barrett originally played number one in 1966 with Rebecca who took on the role last year.
