The ban – part of an EU initiative – will take effect on Wednesday May 20.
Under the new directive, flavored roll-your-own tobacco and “lean” cigarettes will be banned.
Experts believe that young people use flavored cigarettes to relax the airways and reduce the severity of the smoke.
Although it is generally believed that menthol cigarettes are less harmful than their usual counterparts, they are in fact just as harmful to people’s health.
The ban stems from new EU laws on the Tobacco Products Directive, which ban all menthol cigarettes.
In 2018, almost one in eight UK smokers rated menthol as their favorite.
Deborah Arnott, Executive Director of the public health charity Action on Smoking and Health, told the Liverpool Echo: “Research shows that menthol in cigarettes makes it easier for children to smoke and become addicted smokers.
“Getting rid of menthol cigarettes will reduce the likelihood that young people will start smoking and make it easier to quit.”
Under the new regulations, no one can produce or supply cigarettes or roll-your-own tobacco with:
(a) a filter, paper, packaging, capsule or other component containing flavorings;
b) a filter, paper or capsule containing tobacco or nicotine; or
c) a technical characteristic allowing the consumer to modify the smell, taste or intensity of the product’s smoke.
According to Cancer Research, two-thirds of smokers start before the age of 18 with smoking causing around 100,000 deaths each year in the UK.
Amanda Sandford, information manager at ASH, welcomed the ban and said she hoped the move would lead to a reduction in youth smoking.
She explained, “It is naturally difficult to inhale smoke and for many the first time they smoke it is repulsive, but people persevere and that is when they become addicted.

“Menthol cigarettes have been shown to relax the airways and the flavor masks the harshness of the smoke, so young people find it easier to smoke. “
She added, “All cigarettes are harmful and menthol cigarettes are just as dangerous as normal cigarettes. “
