The 58-year-old American singer-songwriter shared the sad news on social media of her son, who is one of two children, whom she shares with former partner Julie Cypher.
A tweet on Etheridge’s official Twitter account said, “We are sad to report that Melissa Beckett’s son is dead and that there will be no home concert today.”
Etheridge followed this up with a statement in which she said that her “heart is broken” after Beckett lost his battle with addiction.
She said in a statement, “Today, I have joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones due to opioid dependence.
“My son Beckett, who was only 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to her today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and his friends.
” My heart is broken. I am grateful to those who have sent their condolences and I feel their love and sincere sorrow.
“We are wrestling with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end, we know he is now out of pain. “
“I will sing again soon. It always healed me. “
Etheridge is best known for the songs Black Velvet, Ain’t It Heavy and Come To My Window. She and Julie also have a daughter, Bailey.
The two children were conceived by artificial insemination and the sperm donor later turned out to be singer David Crosby.
Melissa and Julie separated in 2000 and Etheridge was previously married to actor Lou Diamond-Phillips. She is now married to Linda Wallem.

Etheridge and Crosby discussed the arrangement in a television interview in 2000.
“I don’t think my kids will miss it in any way because they don’t have a father at home everyday,” said Etheridge.
“What they have at home are two loving parents. I think that puts them at the top of the game. ”
Melissa is also the mother of 13-year-old twins, her son Miller and daughter Johnnie, from her relationship with Tammy Lynn Michaels.
Speaking of parenting, Melissa once said to Parents.com: “There is nothing like taking responsibility or creating responsibility for bringing a human being into this world and helping him in his first years.
“It doesn’t matter what equation leads you or what you are for this person. It doesn’t matter at all. It’s the bond between you and the child. “
