In a report dated March 23 – the day after the announcement of the German closure – CIES published a list of the most expensive young people in the five major European leagues. Jadon Sancho was valued at 198.5 million euros astronomical – almost double the valuation of Erling Haaland, second with 101 million euros – and more than double the amount of another talent based in the Bundesliga, Alphonso Davies .
The CIES breaks down the variables into three stages: player (age, length of contract, international status, career progression, performance), club (sport level, economic level) and context (inflation). Sancho is a 20-year-old winger and a complete English international established in a top five of the league, although monopolized by the superiors of Borussia Dortmund.
Last summer it would have been fair to assess Sancho at £ 150 million, but the context is more important than the subject as the next transfer window looms. The clubs will be financially fragile due to the side effects of the coronavirus and the third season of Sancho with Dortmund could extend into the last two years of his contract.
In what promises to be a club auction, Dortmund will do well to raise the cost to nine figures for Sancho. With the exception of the Ousmane Dembele anomaly, which was sold for an extreme £ 135.5 million in the midst of a crazy market in 2017, Dortmund usually doesn’t get extravagant fees for coveted players.
Robert Lewandowski has been authorized to terminate his contract, Bayern Munich has plucked Mario Gotze for £ 31.5 million and Manchester United has paid £ 12 million for Shinji Kagawa. Dortmund finalized a £ 57m contract for Christian Pulisic at Chelsea in a hurry in the middle of last season since he was 18 months old.
Pulisic’s rating was declining, as was Sancho’s. Dortmund Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted that it was likely that Sancho would leave this year before the CIES report; an admission that lowers the price. United has negotiated add-ons for transfer packages in recent years, but Sancho may get cheaper fees than Dembele.
Clubs have more fish to fry than Angel Gomes, waning to sign up for United on contract in 54 days. The renewal of Tahith Chong has left Gomes like the black sheep of the academy herd and his stock is not half as high as that of Sancho when he stopped reporting at the City Football Academy almost three years ago years.
It has been almost three years since Gomes became the fourth youngest player in United history, and he has started three times since. He was 20 in August and watched the scene while dressed in a costume in Linz nine weeks ago. Chong provided his first career pass for Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams started for the 19th time. These two long-term contracts were concluded in October.
Gomes is not a difficult sale for potential clubs who would only have to pay compensation costs to United: developed in one of the most legendary academies of world football, promoted by Jose Mourinho, who is part Winners of the U17 World Cup in England. The desire for regular professional football must prevail over monetary motivations.
Barcelona have taken a liking to Gomes and their team is aging, although they have had enough on their plates with internal fights between players and directors, as well as a presidential election next year. United, Arsenal and Tottenham failed to keep Sancho away from City in 2017, but United is powerless to prevent a national rival from poaching Gomes. Sancho was on a scholarship to City, which cashed 8 million pounds from Dortmund months after being named the best player in the U17 European Championship.
It is not a good omen that the Gomes camp has explored a possible loan to a Premier League club on the due date even if the player was already in Norwich with the under 23s. United was never going to be inclined to let Gomes settle elsewhere during the execution of his contract.
Gomes rejected United’s opening offer at the start of the season after its representatives were “underestimated” by the conditions offered by the club. The sight of Jude Bellingham in Carrington and the interest in Sancho and Jack Grealish are potentially discouraging for Gomes, although the overview is united, they almost all washed their hands of Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata is 32 years old and Jesse Lingard has formed an alliance with Mino Raiola.
United are already optimistic about Odion Ighalo’s possible departure before the restart of the season, aware that his loan was not concluded until Marcus Rashford broke his back. Rashford will be back the next time United plays, as will Paul Pogba, who would leave Gomes in his Paul Smith suit and a seat in the directors’ box.
