PARIS – President Emmanuel Macron has declared that he intends to make France the leading producer of clean vehicles in Europe by encouraging car manufacturers to repatriate production from abroad and to develop new models on French soil.

“We need a motivational goal: to make France the leading European producer of clean vehicles by increasing production to more than one million electric and hybrid cars per year over the next five years,” said Macron. at a press conference.

To achieve this goal, Macron said France would increase the state premium for consumers buying electric cars to 7,000 euros ($ 7,690), up from 6,000 euros.

No car model currently produced in France should be made in other countries, he added.

The government will not sign a € 5 billion public loan for Renault until management and unions conclude talks on the automaker’s French workforce and factories in France, Macron said. .

Overall, government measures to support the auto industry would amount to around 8 billion euros, he said following a visit to a Valeo auto parts factory in northern France.
