Liverpool urged to adopt Erling Haaland transfer approach with Timo Werner decision | Football | sport

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has urged Liverpool to try to sign Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland against RB Leipzig hitman Timo Werner.

Liverpool were close to reaching an agreement for Werner before the coronavirus outbreak disrupted their plans.

Jurgen Klopp is considering whether to add the German international to his team this summer, he will be subject to even stricter financial restrictions.

Werner has raised his goals to 30 in 38 games this season with a hat-trick in Leipzig’s 5-0 win over Mainz on Sunday.

But Phillips thinks Liverpool should instead focus all of its efforts on trying to capture the sensation of 19-year-old Dortmund Haaland.

“If they sue him, it would be very encouraging to hear,” Phillips told Football Insider of Werner.

“It will be for a lot of money, but he looks like a class player.

“Liverpool are at this point where they have to aim for the best and they are certainly one of them.

“If they can’t go get Haaland, who they should go to, while Werner isn’t in the same league, he’s a very good player if they can get him on board.

“It will be very encouraging for Jurgen Klopp to hear that the player wants to go to the club and to this club only. “

If the Reds have to add another striker to their ranks at the end of the season, it will be the keenest for Werner.

“I know Liverpool are the best team in the world right now,” the 24-year-old told ViaSport.

“When you are linked to this team, it makes me very proud.

“It’s a pleasure but I know that in Liverpool there are a lot of good players and I have to improve to learn a lot more to get to this level, to play it. “
