Lesley Stahl shares her personal battle against coronavirus – 60 minutes

One of the rules of journalism is “Don’t be part of history”. But instead of covering the pandemic, I was one of more than a million Americans to join it.

I was not alone on this show. One 60-minute COVID-positive co-worker had almost no symptoms while others had almost all of the symptoms you can imagine. Each case is different.

After two weeks at home in bed, weak, struggling with pneumonia and really scared, I went to the hospital. I found overworked, almost overwhelmed staff. Each of them is kind, sympathetic, gentle and caring from my arrival until the moment, a few days later, when I was taken away by a gauntlet of encouraging doctors. Faced with so many dead, they celebrate their triumphs.

This valiant army of scrubs and masks did more than just work. They fulfilled a mission, answered the call. Thanks to them, like so many other patients, I’m fine now. Tonight we all owe them our gratitude, our admiration and, in some cases, our lives.
