There would be no Premier League title to mark a campaign that has seen only one loss in 38, but Reds fans were firm in their appreciation.
A 2-0 victory over the Wolves on May 12, 2019 brought them to 97 points, but the winners’ medals would still escape them.
Manchester City, Brighton, had the victory they needed to reach 98, and the Jurgen Klopp Reds would be forced to settle for second place.
It wasn’t a glorious failure, the Reds had just been beaten slightly in the arguably most dynamic title race of the Premier League era.
Neither team conceded an inch in a thrilling race that was marked by the constant excellence of both teams.
But while there were no collective honors to be presented 12 months ago, there were three brilliant individual distinctions on display for Klopp players.
Trophies that suggested a bright future were on the horizon.
Sadio Mane’s double against the Wolves allowed him to score up to 22 Premier League goals for the season alongside teammate Mohamed Salah while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s double for Arsenal at Burnley saw him reach the same total.
The Premier League Golden Boot would then be shared in three ways.
“Auba scored twice more?” In Burnley? Wow, I never would have expected, “said Klopp. “So all my players, huh? “
While Mane and Salah shared the honor with their respective gold balls, Alisson Becker received the equivalent of the goalkeeper.
The 65 million pound Brazilian had marked his first season in England with the Golden Glove after keeping 21 clean sheets and only 22 goals shipped. Alisson became the first Liverpool goalkeeper to win the award since Pepe Reina 11 years earlier.
So even if there were not to be a glorious climax for the Premier League season for the Liverpool team as a whole, the three honors awarded would provide more than a hint of what was to come.
The signs were there for everyone to see at Anfield a year ago. Even if they were just further indications of what was already well established, Liverpool was on the right track with Klopp.
Less than three weeks later, the Reds would end their season as European champions, beating Tottenham 2-0 in the final in Madrid.
It would be the appropriate end to a campaign that deserved to be rewarded with tangible silverware for the whole team.
This would be the basis of the success that followed.
“It was great to cross the finish line and add the first set as a team and that then gives you all the tools to continue and move forward,” said James Milner of the success in the Spanish capital on June 1 .
Two months later, Liverpool would beat Chelsea in a penalty shootout in Istanbul to lift the UEFA Super Cup.
Anfield’s trophy room will be further furnished in December when Klopp’s players win the first ever Club World Cup in Liverpool, Qatar.
After a few hard games against Monterrey and Flamengo, the Reds returned to Merseyside as world champions. No more money for the wardrobe.
Liverpool FC essential news
It would only be the prelude to what followed, however, as Liverpool continued to rise to the top of English football.
A 25 point lead was established before Premier League football was suspended in March. Two months later, with only six more needed, the Reds’ hopes of a first title in three decades hover.
At present, there should be an acceptance that “null and void” does not happen, however.
Whether or not football resumes in this country, the only thing that denies Liverpool the title now is an indescribable collapse in the last nine games.
Since the Reds have only collected five points in the past 29 games, the trophy burners are again on hold.
Unlike a year ago, Liverpool will have the winners’ medals that their efforts deserve.
