The Villa midfielder has grown from a promising flexible haired teenager to the club captain and is arguably Dean Smith’s most talented player.
His form has been so brilliant in the Premier League this season – seven goals and six assists in 26 games – that the best clubs are going in circles.
If Grealish continues to join Manchester United, he will undoubtedly be playing with far bigger names than those he once rubbed shoulders with in the Villa locker room.
But, so far, it’s the XI Grealish that has proven to be the most consistent in his career. Check the rules below:
- The XI is made up of players who have made the most appearances alongside our star player or our star manager. We are not looking for an overall “better” XI, and the player / manager himself is not there.
- For a player, appearance numbers are based on the time they spent on the field at the same time as our main man, taking into account both the club and the international level.
- It’s not necessarily the eleven players who spent the most time on the field with / for him, just the eleven who would be on a work team.
- We are not going to offer Garth Crooksesque training, but we could appoint submarines if we want.
- All statistics for minutes played and appearances are courtesy of transfermarkt.co.uk.
- Don’t get angry in the comments section.
Goalkeeper: Sam Johnstone
Games alongside Grealish: 41
Johnstone spent 18 months on loan to Villa Park and his deal would likely have been made permanent in 2018 if Villa were not in financial ruin.
Back right: Alan hutton
Games alongside Grealish: 96
No player has appeared alongside Grealish more than Hutton in his short career with the Scotsman, passing Ahmed Elmohamady into the right back slot.
Central defender: James Chester
Games alongside Grealish: 80
The man who won the final championship playoff trophy with Grealish was a replacement. Chester missed no game in his first two seasons at Villa Park and was instrumental in the development of the 24-year-old.
Central defender: Tyrone Mings
Games alongside Grealish: 37
Mings is one of the pillars on the current side of Villa and has become close with Grealish away from the sacred turf of Villa Park.
He is ahead of former Notts County central defender Alan Sheehan and former Villa Axel Tuanzebe secondment.
Leaving behind: Neil Taylor
Games alongside Grealish: 57
We all know that Hutton is capable enough in the left rear, but we stick to the natural positions and Taylor is the only competitor in the left rear.
Jordan Amavi and Matt Targett have never played as much as Taylor alongside the current Villa captain.

Central environment: Ashley Westwood
Games alongside Grealish: 53
Westwood sneaks in based on appearances alongside Grealish early in his career. Westwood was a key player for Villa in 2014/15 and 2015/16 as Grealish entered.
Central environment: Mile Jedinak
Games alongside Grealish: 53
Jedinak is another who has had a great influence on Grealish’s career. The Australian was one of the players Steve Bruce counted on to manage the locker room during his first two seasons in B6.
Central environment: Conor Hourihane
Games alongside Grealish: 85
Only Hutton has appeared alongside Grealish on more occasions than Hourihane, who is still vying for a place alongside him in the Villa midfielder.
Right winger: Albert Adomah
Games alongside Grealish: 78
Adomah is another of the heroes of the Villa Championship and comfortably seals his place in the XI.
Grealish assisted Adomah’s goal in the 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Villa Park in February 2018, and the winger returned the favor with a center tackle for Grealish in the 4-2 Second victory Villa City derby later that year.
Striker: Jonathan Kodjia
Games alongside Grealish: 63
The flamboyant striker was Villa’s main man in 2016/17 with Grealish as part of his supporting cast. It wasn’t until 2018 that Grealish really overshadowed Kodjia as Villa’s most important player and their careers have moved in very different directions since.
Left winger: Anwar El Ghazi
Games alongside Grealish: 47
El Ghazi points the young Andre Green on the large left place after having started regularly alongside Grealish during the last two seasons.
Grealish’s change of position this season has seen El Ghazi operate mainly on the right, but his best moments for Villa have come from the left.
