The previous record was broken in 2016

Game of Thrones actor Hafthor Bjornsson set a world deadlift record by lifting 501 kg (1,104 pounds).

Bjornsson, a powerlifter who played Ser Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane in the HBO series, broke the record in his gymnasium in his native Iceland.

He raised the bar for two seconds, before lowering the weights and roaring in pleasure.

The event was broadcast by the sports channel ESPN and filmed for the Bjornsson YouTube channel.

Bjornsson, who is 2.05m (6’9 ”), had already won the world’s strongest men competition in 2018.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video posted on YouTube, Bjornsson said, “I’m extremely proud, you know. I am extremely happy.

“It’s great – there’s nothing better than proving people the opposite. So many people don’t believe in me, so many people who say “501 kg will never increase” … But I also had a lot of support. “

He added, “I feel healthy, I feel good. I’m just absolutely speechless, even if I speak a lot now. But I’m excited, super excited – it’s huge for me. “

The record was previously held by Eddie Hall, a Briton who in 2016 became the first man to lift 500 kg.
