Health Canada reports that a total of 81,700 Canadians have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the crisis.

The Deputy Chief Public Health Officer of Canada says the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal have become hot spots and account for almost half of all cases in Canada. Following the surge in daily cases in Ontario this morning, Dr. Howard Njoo was asked if this was the start of the second wave of COVID-19 in that province.

He said that a second wave can only be identified retrospectively after the end of the first wave, we hope. Dr. Njoo says these sudden number changes could happen due to a local area or it could just be “usual fluctuations”, so it’s too early to tell if this is a valid swing to declare a second wave.

He says that another reason for the increase in the number of cases is that Canadians go out to enjoy the summer, but tend to forget that they have to maintain all of these public health measures.
