The couple were inundated with questions about the pronunciation and meaning of the unconventional nickname, which was finally changed slightly after birth.

Last Sunday, Grimes opened up on Instagram about the couple’s change to their child’s name, given that it wouldn’t be legally accepted in the state of California.
She told a fan that the couple had replaced the number 12 in their name with Roman numerals.
“X Æ A-Xii,” she replied, without giving further details on the reason for the change.

Family Law Attorney David Glass previously told People magazine that, although the original name is technically legal, California only accepts the use of 26 characters in English for baby names .
Glass also shared that if the baby’s birth certificate was submitted with the pair’s original name, it would most likely be rejected. The couple will then have “the opportunity to appeal the rejection of the birth certificate application, but it is unlikely to be granted.”
Grimes, whose birth name is Claire Boucher, and the tech entrepreneur welcomed their son on May 4.

According to the media, the new mother previously consulted Twitter and explained that the X represents “the unknown variable” and “Æ, my elven spelling of AI (love and / or artificial intelligence)”.
