France records a new drop in hospitalizations at COVID-19

Paris, May 24 (IANS) France has announced a further drop in hospitalizations for COVID-19, almost two weeks after the government eased the lockdown measures to return to normal.

As of Saturday, 17,178 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 infection, including 1,665 in intensive care units. Figures are down from 17,383 and 1,701 respectively the day before, according to data released by the health ministry, Xinhua reported.

The country’s latest COVID-19 report, released on Friday, was 28,215. An updated count will be released on Monday, the ministry said.

The French government has facilitated a two-month lockdown in the wake of the deceleration of positive cases and the improvement of the situation in hospitals. Since May 11, people have been allowed to move freely without justification; schools and stores have reopened.

The Interior Ministry announced on Saturday a further relaxation of restrictive measures, allowing religious ceremonies and gatherings. But he recommended that the faithful wear masks, keep a distance of one meter and wash their hands.

The government has said it will consider further restrictions if the virus responds and infects more than 3,000 people a day.
