France demands immediate release of sentenced academic in Iran

PARIS (Reuters) – France on Saturday condemned the conviction of Franco-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah in Iran and called for his immediate release.

“This conviction is not based on any serious element or fact and therefore constitutes a political decision,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “We urge the Iranian authorities to immediately release Ms. Adelkhah.”

Iran has sentenced Adelkhah to six years in prison on charges of national security, his lawyer said on Saturday.
