Former Ligue A miner Miguel Marte dies of COVID-19 at age 30

Miguel Marte, a former A minor player, died of COVID-19 complications this week at the age of 30, the team said on social media on Friday.

Marte, catcher and first baseman from the Dominican Republic, played in the Oakland system from 2008 to 2012, reaching Vermont ball A, where he played with current base player Matt Olson, between other.

The news of Marte’s death comes about two weeks after minor league A coach Webster Garrison, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March, was removed from a ventilator. Garrison remains in intensive care in a Louisiana hospital.

Marte hit .251 with a base percentage of .320, 16 home runs and 117 RBI in his five seasons in the Oakland system. A GoFundMe was created to help his wife, Jasmin, and his children, the twins Isabella and Miguel Angel.
