Borderlands is one of the most recent adaptations of video game films underway, with the project making significant progress in becoming a reality. Cate Blanchett is in talks to play the role of Lilith, one of the main recurring characters in the games. Lilith is one of the playable characters of the original Borderlands, which suggests that the film could be inspired by this game more than of its various consequences and fallout. Lilith is one of six female “sirens” in the Borderlands universe, incredibly powerful and tattooed superhumans drawn to the lawless world of Pandora.
Lionsgate has yet to confirm the cast, and Variety sources say negotiations are still underway. It would be the latest in a long line of franchise projects for Blanchett, who was previously Queen Galadriel in the movie Lord of the Rings and Hobbit and Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. The Borderlands movie was first released in February 2020, with Eli Roth from Hostel confirmed to direct the film and produce alongside Avi and Ar Arad. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick are also the executive producers of the film, with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin writing the screenplay.
Roth recently appeared on the PAX East panel of Gearbox, where he revealed that he wanted to reward dedicated cosplayers by throwing them into the film and killing their characters. To learn more about what to expect from the film Borderlands and other high-profile projects, here is a breakdown of each video game film currently in development.
