But the flow was more the union between two friends playing good music than it was a “battle”. The two singers played each of their hits as well as songs written by each.

What surprised many of the 700,000 viewers was that Instagram did not interrupt their live broadcast, and neither Badu nor Scott seem to have noticed it.

“I have no conception of time. I don’t know what that means, “Badu told Scott at one point.

Viewers also didn’t seem to be complaining.

“You are going to let things breathe tonight,” activist April Reign said on Twitter. “It is not a battle. It’s a mutual appreciation. Let our queens take their time. #Verzuz »

People also loved the little moments between Badu and Scott, like when Scott seemed to invent the word “ingenious”.

“Jill said it was a word, so it’s a word,” said activist Brittany Packnett Cunningham.

Badu and Scott meeting on Instagram were part of an ongoing series called Verzuz by producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland as a way to entertain fans during their forties. Previous battles pitted producer-singers Teddy Riley and Babyface, rappers T-Pain and Lil Jon as well as producers Scott Storch and Mannie Fresh.
