Tesla is increasing the price of its self-drive option on electric vehicles worldwide from a hike of $ 1,000 (£ 820).

Founder Elon Musk tweeted that the price “will continue to rise” as his technology improves.

But the entrepreneur said the technology he will add will be worth more than $ 100,000.

Musk has fought with California officials over the restart of Tesla’s US auto assembly.

Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” option is called Autopilot, although it’s not fully autonomous. The autopilot has a number of features, including automatic lane changes, parallel parking and a summon function, which automatically parks and retrieves the car. Upcoming features include the automatic traffic light and stop sign control.

The autonomous driving option will cost $ 8,000 when the price increase takes effect on July 1.

“The price of the FSD will continue to increase as the software approaches full self-driving capacity with regulatory approval,” said Musk in a series of tweets on Monday. ” [At] At this point, the value of FSD is probably somewhere above $ 100,000. “

Tesla was the subject of an investigation by regulatory authorities in the United States after a driver was killed while using the autopilot in 2018. However, the investigation found that the driver was playing a video game on his smartphone at the time of the accident.

Mr. Musk is well known for his frequent tweets, many of which have caused him trouble.

A tweet earlier this month wiped out $ 14 billion from Tesla’s market value after Musk wrote that his stock price was too high.

His latest tweets have also sparked little controversy online, with some questioning the value of $ 100,000 or more that he claims the autonomous driving software will be worth.

One response stated that the value that Mr. Musk claims the autonomous driving package was worth was “crazy”. “Elon, real talk, I love you and the mission, but FSD will never be worth as much,” added the tweet.

The best-selling Tesla Model 3 currently sells for $ 33,690 in the United States if a driver chooses the basic package. With the autopilot, it would currently cost $ 40,690.
