Clubs in the top two Spanish divisions are slated to begin individual training this week after testing for Covid-19 with closed games scheduled for June. But in a strongly formulated joint declaration, the Basque club expressed doubts about the plan.
“We are worried about starting an activity in which we will not be able to complete the first recommendation of all the experts which is the physical distance”, declared the players in a press release delivered to radio Cadena Ser.
“It worries us that by doing what we love most, we could be infected and infect our family and friends and even contribute to a new wave of pandemic – with the terrible consequences it would have for the entire population.
“Everyone’s health should be the most important thing and now is the time to support this idea with actions, not just words. We ask for guarantees and we demand responsibility. “
La Liga responded by saying it was natural for players to be careful about the return, but said it was taking appropriate steps to prevent the spread of the virus. “Of course, we understand that people have various emotions, including fear,” said a spokesperson for the league.
“This is an unprecedented period. However, we take many precautions for a safe and controlled return of football. Playing football will be safer than going to the supermarket or pharmacy, for example. “
As part of a four-step plan to restart the league, players will be tested daily for the virus. The training centers are already being disinfected during preparation and will be subject to strict hygiene conditions upon resumption of activities.
Spanish football has been on hold since early March, when Eibar hosted the Real Sociedad behind closed doors. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of more than 25,000 people in Spain since February, but the spread of the disease has slowed due to one of the most severe blockages in Europe.
Eibar has the smallest stadium in the Spanish elite and one of the smallest budgets. Always present in La Liga since their promotion in 2014, they are only two points and two places above the relegation zone.
