Their previously scheduled date has been crossed out due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker are still expected to meet at a major upcoming event.

Poirier (25-6 MMA, 17-5 UFC), the former interim UFC lightweight champion, should return against one of the contenders for the division at Hooker (20-8 MMA, 10-4 UFC).

The confrontation is being prepared for the UFC event on June 27, MMA Junkie learned from a person familiar with the situation. They asked for anonymity because the promotion has not yet announced. Combate first reported the news.

Sources say the UFC prefers to fight at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. However, it is subject to the lifting of current travel restrictions and Hooker’s ability to fly abroad from New Zealand. If Hooker is unable to enter the country due to the limitations brought about by the COVID-19 crisis, the fight should be transferred to a map on UFC “Fight Island” in July.

Poirier, No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports / MMA Junkie MMA lightweight rankings, nearly became the undisputed champion in September when he suffered a loss of submission against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in September. “The Diamond” had a great run before the loss, exceeding the likes of Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez.

Since losing to Nurmagomedov, Poirier has undergone hip surgery and pushed for a fight that “really excites him,” even if it meant moving into the welterweight division. He will however remain in his light house for his sixth consecutive main event.

The No. 10 Hooker (20-8 MMA, 10-4 UFC), meanwhile, will get his second headlining in a row, but he hopes it will be less controversial than the previous one. Hooker secured a spot in his hometown in New Zealand at the UFC on ESPN + 26 earlier this year and came out with a split decision victory over Paul Felder.

Despite some debate around the decision, Hooker came out victorious and now has 7-1 since moving from featherweight in June 2017. Poirier was one of the names Hooker called after his win, and after it didn’t materialize in May 16, he’s ready to fulfill his wish this summer.

The last programming of the UFC card of June 27 includes:

  • Dustin Poirier versus Dan Hooker
  • Viviane Araujo vs. Jennifer Maia
  • Alexa Grasso vs. Ji Yeon Kim
