The father of Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith died four weeks after contracting Covid-19. The Premier League club has announced the death of Ron Smith, a Villa fan for 79 years.
A club statement read: “The Aston Villa family is saddened to announce the passing of Ron Smith, the father of our current head coach Dean, at the age of 79.
“Ron, who recently lived in a nursing home after being diagnosed with dementia six years ago, contracted a coronavirus four weeks ago and after a short hospital stay, he died with his family at its ratings.
“A long-time supporter, Ron has been a steward at Villa Park for many years and passed on his love of the club to his children.
“In addition to being a regular at home games, Ron was also there to witness the best day of May 1982 when Villa won the European Cup in Rotterdam.
“Everyone’s thoughts at the football club are currently with Dean and his family at this very distressing time and would kindly ask that the family’s privacy be respected. “
