Is the money yours, free and clear?

Yes. You don’t have to pay tax on the stimulus payments you receive from the IRS. It is also not an advance on your usual tax refund. If you receive a check now, your 2019 tax refund will not be smaller as a result. You can spend all of your stimulus money like cash. The IRS will only reduce the payment to compensate for child support for delinquent children.

How to use the Economic Impact Payment prepaid debit card

On May 18, the US Treasury announced that it was starting to send approximately 4 million prepaid debit cards called EIP cards. The Treasury said it was sending these cards instead of paper checks to certain eligible US residents for whom the government does not have banking information. We asked the Treasury to clarify who gets a card versus a paper check.

The Treasury said you can use the card to make purchases, get money from network ATMs, and transfer funds to your personal bank account free of charge. You can also use the card at stores that accept Visa debit cards. Once you have received your EIP card in the mail, go to the EIP card page to configure it.

Find the calendar to know when you can expect to receive your check

You can use the IRS Get my payment to see a schedule of your payment. The US Postal Service also has a free service that can notify you when your check arrives by mail. You will need to register.

When will the checks be fully paid?

For those who expect to receive their payments by mail, the IRS said it plans to greatly increase the number of payments it would mail in June. If you wish to receive your payment directly from your bank via direct deposit, however, the deadline for providing your bank details in the IRS Get My Payment portal has passed. Those who previously provided the IRS with their banking information can still receive their payment by direct deposit.

The Social Security Administration stated that recipients of the Security Income Supplement (SSI) who had not filed 2019 and 2018 returns and who did not have a representative beneficiary should have received their electronic payment from the IRS at most late May 13 by direct deposit or at their Direct Express Card. For SSI recipients who receive their monthly SSI payment by paper check, the IRS began sending checks on May 15.

The amount of stimulus money you get depends on your taxes

The total amount of your stimulus check will be based on your adjusted gross income, or AGI, on your 2019 federal income tax return or – if you have not done so this year – your 2018 return.

If you have file your 2019 federal income tax return, you can find this figure on line 8b of the 2019 federal tax form 1040. This is line 7 of the 2018 1040 tax form. If you haven’t filed this year, don’t worry. The US government has delayed the 2019 tax due date as of July 15 following a coronavirus.

Here is who is eligible for a stimulus payment

The amount you receive will depend on your total income in 2019 or 2018. If you qualify, you will receive a payment. Here is who qualifies:

  • If you are a single US resident and have an adjusted gross income of less than $ 99,000
  • If you deposit as head of household and earn less than $ 146,500
  • If you jointly produce without children and earn less than $ 198,000

Read on to find out how your payment is calculated and how much you can expect. You can also check out this Washington Post calculator.

The IRS has stated that a person who died before payment was received, a non-resident alien or an incarcerated person does not qualify for a check. These payments must be returned if received, said the IRS.

How much you will get as a single taxpayer

A single US resident must have a Social Security number and an AGI less than $ 75,000 to receive the total amount of $ 1,200. The amount decreases as your AGI increases. If your adjusted gross income reaches $ 99,000, you will not be eligible for the stimulus.

Heads of families

If you deposit as a head of household, you will get the full payment of $ 1,200 if your AGI is $ 112,500 or less, the amount decreasing until you reach $ 146,500.

Couples filing jointly

Married couples who jointly deposit without children with adjusted gross income less than $ 150,000 will receive a payment of $ 2,400, falling to zero at $ 198,000.

For kids

For each child aged 16 and under in the family, parents will receive a payment of $ 500. Parents will not receive payment for children born, adopted or fostered in 2020, as the payment is based solely on information from your 2019 or 2018 tax return. The IRS said you may be able to request to the child next year an additional credit on your 2020 tax return. Older children and other dependents may not be eligible for payment.

If you did not file a federal tax for 2018, do so now

The IRS has stated that if you have not filed your 2018 federal taxes, this could affect your stimulus check and urges anyone who has not filed a 2018 income tax return to file now. Be sure to include direct deposit banking information on the return.

If you are generally not required to file a tax return, you can still receive a payment

Many of those who are not normally required to file an income tax return – including seniors, social security and disability insurance recipients and railway retirees – will not need to file a simple tax return to receive payment, said the IRS.

The IRS has stated that recipients of the additional security income will automatically receive the full economic impact payment of $ 1,200, with no action required on their part.

Others, including those who did not file a 2018 or 2019 return because they are within normal income limits to file a tax return, can use the non-filer portal to get their payment. To get started, go to the IRS non-filers website: enter the payment information here and press the button Non-filers: enter payment information here button. As part of the process, you will enter personal information and, if desired, receive your stimulus check by direct deposit, Bank information.

What about social security recipients?

The Treasury Department has stated that social security recipients who are generally not required to file tax returns will not need to file a short tax return to receive payment. Instead, the IRS will use information from Form SSA-1099 for Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

The IRS said that automatic payments should already arrive for social security recipients, survivors or disability insurance benefits and railway retirement benefits.

What about those who receive federal benefits and have children?

The IRS said those who receive federal benefits, have dependent children and were not required to file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 must act by late April or early May to receive full payment this year.

Without submitting this information before the due date, the IRS will give you $ 1,200 this year and the additional $ 500 per eligible child with your tax return for the 2020 tax year – about a year from now.

SSI and VA recipients had until May 5 to update the IRS.

The update deadline for those receiving social security, survivor or disability or railway retirement benefits was April 22. The IRS said beneficiaries of these groups should receive checks.

The deadline has passed to configure the automatic transfer for sending the check to your bank account

If you do not have a direct deposit to your bank account, the deadline for providing your bank details on the IRS Get My Payment portal was May 13. Those who previously provided the IRS with their banking information can still receive their payment via direct deposit. And you can still use the Get My Payment portal to check the status of your payment.

To avoid scams, the IRS warns you not to provide your direct deposit or other banking information to others who offer to help you set up a wire transfer.

Do you need to register, apply or request your check?

For the most part, the federal government will automatically send you your check electronically or by mail, if you are eligible. If you have not filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019, the IRS has declared that you may have to file one to receive a payment. Scroll down to the “If you are generally not required to file a tax return, you can still receive payment” section for details on who and how to file a return.

What to do if you don’t receive your check

If you are eligible for a payment, the IRS plans to send you a letter regarding your payment to your last known address within 15 days of sending the money. The IRS said the letter will provide information on how the IRS made the payment and how to report that it did not receive the payment if you don’t get it. However, several CNET readers report that the letter does not contain clear instructions on what to do if you do not receive payment. We asked the IRS for clarification.

Beginning May 18, the IRS added 3,500 telephone representatives to resolve potential payment issues. However, representatives will not be able to resolve specific problems with your payment. CNET readers say they can access the service and receive help.

We have advice for how to best use your stimulus and how to avoid falling victim to a scam. In addition to the economic stimulus package, the United States government has delayed the deadline for filing tax returns until July 15. If you need more help, here is how to get financial relief.
