Nestled under the hills of the coastal town of Portree on the picturesque Isle of Skye, Home Farm was a thriving care home with 36 elderly residents.

But the Highland idyll was shattered, with six dead and dozens of others gravely ill after an epidemic of Covid-19.

HC-One, Britain’s largest chain of nursing homes and operator of Home Farm, faces allegations that it failed to take sufficient account of the government’s foreclosure by dropping workers as far as Kent, 645 miles away, to fill staff shortages in an area where wages are notoriously poor.

Home Farm is one of the most affected nursing homes in the country, with 30 residents and 27 employees testing positive for the virus. That means an island with 3%
