A New York tourist has been arrested for allegedly raping the Hawaii traveler quarantine after posting photos of himself sunbathing and wearing a surfboard on Instagram, state officials said.

Hawaiian authorities have cracked down on travelers who challenge a 14-day mandatory quarantine for people arriving on the islands, a rule put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Hawaii reported a new case of COVI-19 on Friday, bringing the total to 638 cases and 17 deaths statewide.

Some tourists have been arrested for defying quarantine.

Tarique Peters, 23, of the Bronx, arrived in Honolulu on Monday, said a statement from the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

“He allegedly left his hotel room on the day of his arrival and traveled to many places using public transportation,” the statement said. “The authorities have read his publications on the social networks of citizens who have seen them – on the beach with a surfboard, sunbathing and walking around Waikiki at night. “

Agents from the attorney general’s office arrested him on Friday morning. Hotel staff told officers that they had seen Peters leave his room and the hotel several times.

Travelers in quarantine are not allowed to leave hotel rooms or residences for any reason, except in the event of a medical emergency. Hotel guests do not receive maid service and must arrange for food to be delivered to them.

Peters was booked and his bond was set at $ 4,000.

He could not be reached immediately for comment on Friday. He did not immediately respond to messages on an Instagram account with the username @tariquepeters.

Lawmakers are struggling to improve the enforcement of quarantine as people continue to arrive in Hawaii. Thursday, 252 visitors and 318 residents arrived, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. In the same period last year, nearly 30,000 passengers arrived in the tourism-dependent state daily.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially the elderly and people with existing health problems, this can cause more serious illnesses, including pneumonia and death.
