The Chinese ambassador to Israel was found dead in his Tel Aviv apartment, according to Israeli media.

Du Wei, 58, was appointed envoy of China to Israel in February, after being the country’s ambassador to Ukraine. He previously discussed quarantine 14 days after his arrival and received diplomatic powers in late March.

Police have now opened an investigation into his death. Mr. Wei leaves behind a wife and a son.

Earlier this year, he shared his hopes of bringing China and Israel closer together and addressed the anger directed at his country in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

He told the Haaretz newspaper that China is a “law-abiding and responsible country” which “must be trusted.”

Wei continued, “When the disease spread around the world, some said that China should apologize. They were looking for a scapegoat.

“Throughout history, a certain group of people have been accused of having spread plagues more than once. It is despicable and must be condemned.

“Disease is the enemy of all mankind, and the world should fight it together. “
