Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke 04: Haaland, Brandt and Guerreiro shine at Revierderby on their return from the Bundesliga

Saturday’s Revierderby was Borussia Dortmund as the hosts beat rival Schalke 4-0 to mark the return of the Bundesliga after a two-month hiatus. Playing at Signal Iduna Park without fans due to the coronavirus pandemic, Dortmund used sensational performances from its first three players and Raphael Guerreiro to move to a point in Bayern Munich (rankings). Schalke, the American Weston McKennie starting in the middle, could not contain his rival, who scored twice in each half. American Gio Reyna had to leave for Dortmund before picking up an injury during warm-ups.

Here are three things to remember from the match:

Clinic and sharp

Borussia Dortmund were as efficient as possible, scoring on their only four shots on goal to set the tone and bury a helpless side of Schalke. The pass was fast, clean and perfectly timed, and when they were ready to jump forward, Erling Haaland was already calling the ball and stepping in the back line.

They mixed a little flair, put their passes exactly where they needed to be and made it easy.

The first objective, who came from Haaland, followed by a delicious touch from Julian Brandt to Thorgan Hazard, who then put Haaland to perfection.

The second goal again saw a perfect pass from Brandt, setting up Guerreiro with this great effort:

Hazard then went 3-0 at the start of the second half before the match goal saw Haaland filter an assist to Guerreiro, who did so:

Schalkes’ defense was nonexistent

It will not be a game that Weston McKennie and company will remember, but it was not his fault. He had a few moments both on and off the ball, but at times during the transition he was seated deeply or had to continue with only two assisting defensemen. It got worse when Schalke wanted to return to the game, and the visitors ultimately had no chance of returning.

2-0, Dortmund went for their third goal and got it, Haaland getting a ball in front. When the ball enters Brandt into space, just look at where Schalke’s back line is.

As bad as possible.

Schalke in trouble regarding the Europa League?

Schalke entered the day in the Europa League and will end the day outside the top six. Before long, they might be off the top half of the table. This result extended Schalke’s winning streak to eight games. In those eight games, they just scored two goals. The lack of creativity in the attack effectively saw them excluded from any game in which they score a goal or two. With a defense that has conceded 13 goals in its last four games, what hope can a team not defend and cannot score? A promising start to the season is starting to falter after just one game since returning from the break.
