Cooper announced the birth of his son Wyatt on Thursday night on his show and in a long Instagram post. Her son was born Monday through a surrogate mother, the journalist said, and is named after his father who died at the age of 10.

The anchor said he thought it was important, amidst the stories of those suffering and dying during the coronavirus pandemic, to “hang on to moments of joy.”
The segment included several photos of the newborn.
“As a gay child, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I am grateful to all who led the way, as well as to the doctors and nurses and all those involved in the birth of my son, ”Cooper wrote on Instagram. “Above all, I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate mother who carried Wyatt and cared for her with love and tenderness, and gave birth to her.”
Cooper, 52, regretted that his parents and brother were not alive to meet his son. Cooper’s mother Gloria Vanderbilt died in July at 95.
The Instagram post included a photo of Cooper feeding his son a bottle. The baby’s middle name, Morgan, is also a family name. It was a name his parents considered for Cooper, according to a list he had recently found.
