AEW Dynamite on TNT (episode 31)
Broadcast live on May 6, 2020 from Jacksonville, Florida at Daily’s Place

[Hour One] A video package summed up the show from last week, then the opening of Dynamite was released… Fireworks started while Jim Ross, Excalibur and Tony Schiavone registered in the comments. Several wrestlers were represented seated behind the barricade. Some wrestlers wore masks. The broadcast team went through the programming and added that the AEW female champion Nyla Rose would be in action …

1. Cody against Joey Janela. Dasha Gonzalez was the announcer. Pyro took off at the entrances of the two wrestlers. The wrestlers shook hands and started the match. Ross noted that the wrestlers behind the barricade practiced social distancing. Ross pointed out that they were following the rules.

In the ring, Cody settled for CrossRhodes, but Janela pushed him away and Cody snapped in the middle rope. The two men found themselves at the edge of the ring where Janela made Cody run in the barricade. They fought near the scene. Cody slammed Janela’s face off the rail. They fought on the small ramp, which was at the level of the ring. Janalea returned to one of the entrance falls and charged Cody, who moved, causing Janela to be crushed in the ring ropes.

Cody sent Janala to the ring, then performed a moon jump off the stage. Back inside the ring, Janela caught Cody with a superkick. Janela climbed up and dropped the upper rope bend for a near fall. Janela went to the ropes and played wrestlers at the edge of the ring. Cody cut it and performed a reverse superplex for a near fall.

Cody removed his weight belt and threw it into the crowd. Cody opted for CrossRhodes, but Janela avoided it. Cody stuffed a piledriver and the power slammed Janela for a near fall. Cody opted for a springboard, but Janela grabbed it and turned it into a German suplex.

Janela ran the ropes and knocked Cody down with a clothesline. Cody avoided a Janela moon jump and then performed a Cody Cutter for a count of two. Shortly after, Cody hit his CrossRhodes paver and scored the pin …

Cody beat Joey Janela in 13:25.

Ross hyped that Nyla Rose was coming back after a break … [C]

Powell POV: A fun opening game. It’s nice to see Janela hang out in a traditional game rather than just being a hardcore style wrestler. AEW appears to have more wrestlers in the crowd area than usual, but they don’t sound as loud in the outdoor hall as they did on the Norcross, Georgia recordings. Even so, it continues to be a much better approach than the really empty place settings that WWE and Impact Wrestling use when recording. A little noise greatly contributes to creating an atmosphere.

The broadcast team spoke at his desk. Schiavone has indicated that he will speak with Nyla Rose. They put together a video package that summarized Rose defeating Riho to win the AEW Women’s Championship and the title of Rose. The narrator said that there had been a change in the female division and said that Dr. Britt Baker emerged and it was only a matter of time before she won a title. The narrator also noted that Hikaru Shida is 7-1 and the number one competitor. The narrator also mentioned Penelope Ford as a candidate…

Nyla Rose’s opponent was already in the ring when Rose was introduced. Schiavone interviewed Rose on stage. Rose recognized the video package and said that she is the champion and that she will always be …

2. AEW women’s champion Nyla Rose against Kenzie Paige in an untitled match. Excalibur said it was Paige’s debut at AEW. He added that Paige was 18 and has been fighting since she was 14. Ross noted that she was trained by Tom Prichard and also received a coach from Ricky Morton. Rose dominated the game and carried out a senton bomb. Rose had the pin, but she picked up Paige and then executed two powerbombs and a Beast Bomb before getting the count of three …

AEW Women’s Champion Nyla Rose defeated Kenzie Paige in 2:20 in an untitled match.

Powell POV: A strong squash match victory for Rose. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Rose on TV, so the video package summarizing her story and featuring the best female players was a really nice touch.

MJF delivered a promo sitting in a chair with the city skyline behind a window. He spoke of the insecurity of other wrestlers because he was 24 years old and took their place. He said he was not The Rock, Roddy Piper or Ric Flair, something the company has never seen before. He said he could sit and sip wine because he knows what, when he returns to work, his place on the throne will remain without a lonely scratch. MJF got up and the crew replaced his red chair with a throne. MJF declared next week that he was getting back on his throne … A graphic return of MJF to the ring for next week … [C]

Shawn Spears delivered a promo for what appeared to be a hotel room. He talked about the Lance Archer match against Dustin Rhodes and blamed Cody for not saving his brother from the bloody blows. Spears showed that Cody was not throwing in the towel and wondered if it was because Cody was selfish or because he wanted to perpetuate the legacy of Rhodes by himself. Spears claimed that Dustin’s career was over and said that he could not live with himself if he did what Cody did …

Schiavone stood at the edge of the ring and interviewed MJF, who was standing with a clean, shaven Shawn Spears while Wardlow was standing behind them. Spears said the story of MJF’s return is the greatest in the history of the sport. He asked him if he was 100%. MJF said he was too cured. Schiavone has said that MJF will fight next week’s show and that he will also face Jungle Boy on double-Nothing Pay-per-view. MJF made a spit and was unhappy with the match with Jungle Boy…

Frankie Kazarian entered and was accompanied by Christopher Daniels and Scorpio Sky… [C] Jon Moxley entered from the hall…

3. AEW champion Jon Moxley against Frankie Kazarian in an untitled match. Schiavone noted that Daniels and Sky walked away to let Kazarian go one-on-one. Ross called him honorable. Kazarian went on the offensive, but Moxley knocked him down on the top rope. Kazarian landed on the scene and sold a knee injury while they were on a freeze-frame break. [C]

Moxley and Kazarian fought at the edge of the ring during the break. Moxley used a Russian leg sweep to drive Kazarian into the barricade. Back inside the ring, Moxley picked up Kazarian in a suplex position and dropped him on his back, then covered him for two counts. At the end of the break, Moxley launched a knee that sent Kazarian crashing to the ground.

Moxley went to the top rope and jumped on Kazarian, who caught him with a boot in his face. Back in the ring, Kazarian jumped over the ropes and DDT’d Moxley down, resulting in an imminent fall. Moxley has joined an exit from the German suplex. Kazarian returned immediately with a Backstabber, then performed an Unprettier for another upcoming fall.

Moxley returned with a dropkick and then went to get his paver, but Kazarian stuffed it. Kazarian applied a leg lock, which Moxley broke off with a free kick with his other leg. Shortly after, Kazarian caught Moxley falling into the ropes with a fallen leg. Kazarian slapped Moxley and set himself up for a suplex. Moxley floated, but Kazarian caught it with another German suplex.

[Hour Two] Moxley caught a Kazarian in charge with a lariat clothesline. Ross called it a show flight match. Kazarian rolled Moxley in a pin for a near fall, then continued with another attempt at a pin for another near fall. Kazarian pushed Moxley into the corner. Kazarian went to the ropes, but Moxley followed him. Kazarian pushed Moxley back into the ring and then jumped over him. Moxley avoided loading Kazarian around and ended up belittling him with the Paradigm Shift.

AEW champion Jon Moxley defeated Frankie Kazarian in an untitled match in 16:25.

After the match, seven masked members of the Order of Darkness attacked Moxley. Daniels and Sky lacked help to help the broadcast team recall the faction’s UCS issues. Ross said members of the Order of Darkness would be arrested if this happened outside the building. Members of the Order of Darkness dominated Moxley and the SCU trio.

Brodie Lee stepped onto the stage dressed in a costume and slammed a chair over Daniels’ head on the stage. Lee entered the ring and hit Moxley with a lariat discus. Lee had a microphone and said he was there to respond to the bonus Moxley had put on his own head last week. Lee said there was no crowd for him or any energy to lift him up. Lee said no one was there to save him. “This is the energy you are feeling now,” said Lee.

Lee said he had so many desires as Moxley and that he was not the same person who had watched with him in the past. Lee said he is a leader who makes life extraordinary. Lee said his men would stand up and sacrifice for him. Lee looked at the AEW title belt and said that Moxley is the unhappy soul who came into possession of what he wants.

Lee said Evil Uno told him that Moxley was a reasonable man. Lee challenged Moxley to an AEW championship game. He said he didn’t know if Moxley was reasonable, an actor, an MMA fighter, a wrestler or what he was. He wondered if he was just a scared little boy who grew up without a dad. Lee told him to take the “or we’ll make you” challenge. Lee dropped Moxley’s microphone.

“Dude, all you had to do was ask,” said Moxley before laughing. Lee kicked Moxley’s head, then asked the other members of the Black Order to put the boots on. Lee went up on stage and watched while his servants left Moxley lying …

Powell POV: I felt numb in the match between Moxley and Kazarian because it was an untitled match between the champion and a guy who generally works by match, so the result was predictable. But they worked very well together and Kazarian received more than enough offense to make things interesting. The post-game attack was well done. It’s a little strange that none of the babyfaces jumped the railing to help Moxley and SCU, but I can live with that given the circumstances. I don’t believe the broadcast team used the word Creepers to describe members of the Order of Darkness, so perhaps that name has been deleted. I guess that means we get Moxley against Lee for the AEW championship at Double Or Nothing.

The broadcast team summed up the highlights of Dark Order’s attack on Moxley and SCU …

A pre-recorded Brandi Rhodes promo has been broadcast. She spoke to Jake Roberts and Lance Archer. She talked about being a young lady in distress and seeing her husband come to save her. She said it wasn’t 1991. She said if Jake slaps her, she will slap her. Brandi said her husband is a good guy who hugs babies, but she is more difficult to identify. She said she was not Cleopatra of Caesar or Delilah of Sampson. She said she was Brandi Rhode and Roberts would keep her name out of her dirty mouth …

Powell POV: Can’t I wait for the Archer vs Brandi match?

4. Lance Archer (with Jake Roberts). against QT Marshall (with Brandi Rhodes). Archer came out and knocked over one of the wrestlers with a forearm hit in the head. Roberts wore a face mask and took his place at the edge of the ring. Schiavone said that Brodie Lee left with the AEW championship belt. Roberts lowered the mask and laughed as Archer dominated Marshall in the ring. Schiavone excited AEW Dark for Tuesday. Archer hit Marshall on the apron and then chewed Brandi. [C]

Marshall was at the ring when Britt Baker took off his shoe and hit him with it. Brandi took Britt’s shoe and threw it away. Back inside the ring, Marshall had a little offense, including a suplex. Marshall climbed up and jumped on an Archer charing, which then knocked him over with a shoulder pad. Archer placed Marshall on the top line, then stopped. Archer could have pinned Marshall, but he picked it up so he could apply his EDB claw. Archer slammed Marshall’s head in the carpet a few times and got the pin.

Lance Archer beat QT Marshall in 6:35.

After the match, Baker attacked Brandi and DDT on the ground. Baker rolled Brandi inside the ring. Roberts brought a snake into the ring and placed it on Brandi, then hovered over it in a push-up position for a while. Roberts let the snake crawl on Brandi. The broadcast team explained that wrestlers take a long time to get into the ring from behind the scenes because of the layout. They said the wrestlers take a golf cart from the locker room to the entrance … [C]

Powell POV: A moment’s return to the Damienne. I love this. Brandi’s promo seemed unnecessary, but the angle with Roberts placing the snake on it was a big step backwards. I love the fact that the broadcast team explained why Cody was not there to back up. Again, there is always the problem of babyfaces on the edge of the ring not getting involved, but I’m sure many people in a legitimate situation would be reluctant to save someone from a snake.

The broadcast team announced Moxley vs Lee for the AEW double-Nothing Pay-per-view championship. They also caused a sensation between MJF vs Jungle Boy, Cody vs Archer in the TNT Title tournament final and a casino ranking match. Excalibur has declared that the winner of the classification match will receive a future AEW championship match. Ross said they will have the details of the match next week …

Behind the scenes, Taz asked Darby Allin to lose to Cody last week. Allin did not respond. Taz said he would like to help. Allin detonated it and walked away without saying a word …

Broadcast team meditated Brodie Lee against Christopher Daniels, return to the ring of MJF, Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus against Chuck Taylor and Trent, an interview with Lance Archer and Jake Roberts and Hikaru Shida against Penelope Ford against Britt Baker against Kris Statlander in a four-way, and Chris Jericho in action for next week…

Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara and Jake Hager entered the main event. Jericho and “Pineapple Pete” bickered at the edge of the ring. Schiavone paid tribute to the nurses and Ross recognized the death of Joe Pedicino and wished his wife good luck… [C] Kenny Omega entered after the break, followed by Matt Hardy…

5. “The Sex Gods” Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara (with Jake Hager) against Kenny Omega and “Broken” Matt Hardy in a street fight. Ross noted that this was Hardy’s ring debut at AEW. He also said that the falls count anywhere and that the time limit was the time remaining on television. Guevara returned Hardy, who bit his finger to start the game. Schiavone has announced that Jericho’s match next week will be against Pineapple Pete (a / k / a Suge D, Sugar Dunkerton).

Jericho and Hardy fought in the fall, leaving Omega and Guevara to fight in the ring. Jéricho came back and joined Guevara to work on Omega. Jericho performed a Lionsault on Omega. Regular Matt Hardy came back (not the broken version) and worked on both heels. Hardy hit a Twist of Fate on Jericho and got the pin, but Guevara broke it. Guevara caught Hardy with a kick. Omega drilled Guevara with an instant dragon suplex.

Jericho returned to the ring with a bat and hit Omega with him while Ross reminded viewers that everything was legal. Ross also noted that the Young Bucks and the Hangman Page respected the social distance caused by the pandemic. Hardy pulled out a ladder from under the ring and slid it into the ring while Omega slid a table inside the ring.

Omega pierced Guevara with one knee to the head, then placed him on top of the table. Hardy climbed the ladder and splashed Guevara across the table. Hardy had the pin, but Hager removed the referee from the ring. Omega dived into Hager, who caught him and dropped his face first onto the ring apron. They cut to a PIP break. [C]

Jericho and Hardy fought in the lobby area and a group of spectator wrestlers followed. Hardy found a pipe and hit Jericho and Hager with it. Hardy pushed Jericho into a cooler in Jacksonville Jaguars, but Jericho pulled out an ice pack and hit Hardy with it. Jericho and Hager pushed Hardy into the cooler. Omega introduced themselves and took Hager out with a trash can.

Guevara introduced himself and plunged Omega’s head into an ATM, then withdrew money from the ATM. Omega led Guevara into a pillar. Omega picked up Guevara and bombarded him powerfully in a garage door. Hager tried to get involved, but Omega hit him with a V-Trigger knee and then threw him on a pile of barricades. Jericho showed up with a wheeled cart and pushed it into Omega.

Jericho sent Omega to a barricade. Jericho placed an orange pylon on his head and laughed like a witch. Funny. Omega hit Jericho with a wet floor panel. Hardy emerged from the cooler and was back in Broken mode. Matt got into a golf cart and had trouble getting it started, but he finally did and headed for Jericho. Ross said he seemed to be crushing Jericho. Omega joined Hardy in the basket. They chased Guevara, who was struck.

Omega placed Jericho on a table. Omega is mounted on a forklift. Hager introduced himself and removed Hardy from the table. Omega made a moon jump from the top of the raised cart and landed on the three men. Cool place. Omega placed Jericho on his shoulders. Santana and Ortiz introduced themselves and attacked Omega. Hardy joined, but was quickly outnumbered by the inner circle.

Hager, Santana and Ortiz made a Shield style electric bomb that put Hardy across a table. Jericho handed him Omega and he slammed it on top of the golf cart. Hager pushed Omega toward Jericho, who struck him with the Judas Effect elbow and scored the pin.

Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara defeated Kenny Omega and “Broken” Matt Hardy in 19:25 in a Street Fight.

Members of the inner circle stood in an area where the TIAA bank field could be seen behind them and the name of their faction appeared on the dashboard behind them. They posed in front of the camera to close the show…

Powell POV: A wild fight with really fun moments to end the show. I like the spectator wrestlers to follow the action, because it gave a good atmosphere to the hall part of the fight. As an NFL fan, it was also cool to see them working on plans for the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium. Hardy’s wardrobe changes from Broken to Matt didn’t do much for me, but it’s impossible to measure how it works with the masses without the presence of a live crowd. Finishing the advantage of the numbers in the inner circle was a bit lazy, but they had to put the heat on the faction after spending the past few weeks providing the most humorous and entertaining moments in Norcross recordings.

Overall, it was fun to see AEW live again and they had an entertaining episode. I will have more to say about this episode in my audio review of the same night for Dot Net members. Let me know what you think by rating it in our post-exposure survey available on the main page. Stay safe.
