Glendale police update on the Westgate Entertainment District shooting on May 20, 2020.
Three police officers were killed on Wednesday night in a reputed commercial complex near Phoenix and the shooter was in detention, according to police in the suburbs of Glendale.
Police responded to the Westgate Entertainment District at around 7:25 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting in the area, according to Glendale police spokesman Tiffany Ngalula.
Ngalula said three people were killed, one of whom was in critical condition at a nearby hospital. The other two victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The shooting was no longer active when police arrived at the scene, said Ngalula.
The gunman, who Ngalula did not identify, was found in the Westgate area. Ngalula said the police “challenged” him and was able to safely detain him.
A video circulated on social networks Wednesday evening, seeming to show a man pretending to be the shooter. One of the videos showed the man with a semi-automatic rifle.
Police were aware of the video, said Ngalula.
State Senator Martin Quezada tweeted that he had witnessed a gunman in the area, armed with an assault weapon.
“I just witnessed an armed terrorist with an AR-15 shooting on Westgate,” he wrote. “There are several victims. “
Many other videos showed store employees and guests sheltering on site.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the people and families affected tonight, as well as the first responders and police on the scene,” said Arizona’s governor Doug Ducey via Twitter. “The state is there to continue to provide its full support to the victims and the community.”
YAM Properties, a commercial real estate company owned by GoDaddy founder Bob Parsons, purchased the Westgate Entertainment District in 2018.
Amber Liptai, spokesperson for Parsons’ parent company BIG YAM, said in a statement that property management and security worked with the Glendale Police Department.
“We are deeply disturbed by this incident and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families,” said Liptai. “Westgate will continue to work closely with Glendale Police and internal security to provide the best possible security for our customers, tenants and residents.”
Westgate opened in 2006 just before the first season of the Arizona Cardinals at Glendale. The resort is adjacent to the State Farm Stadium, which has hosted two Super Bowls.
Sports are central to Westgate, which is adjacent to the Gila River Arena, an NHL hockey and concert hall.
Westgate, with its iconic fountains, is home to many restaurants, bars, shops and offices. It is one of the most important entertainment destinations in the region and every year the Fiesta Bowl is packed with college football fans.
