As the Kentucky Derby moved in September, the Arkansas Derby took over the vacant Category 1 horse races this Saturday. But while the date and atmosphere of the race were different, at least one of the results could be qualified back to normal.
Charlatan became the favorite with a 2/5 odds and took first place in the Division 1 race, giving legendary trainer Bob Baffert his sixth win at Oaklawn in the past nine years. The horse comfortably won the race in 1: 48.49 and gained 100 points towards the Kentucky Derby race.
The Division 2 race started with Wells Bayou which exploded at breakneck speed, but it was Nadal who won the victory, taking the lead around three quarters of a mile. Nadal is yet another horse that Baffert trains, allowing the legendary trainer to sweep the Arkansas Derby, and has two horses well placed to race for roses at Churchill Downs in September.
It was the second time in the history of the race, the field was divided into two divisions, each filled with 11 of the 22 participants. Running was yet another example of the sport trying to get ahead as the coronavirus raged with an event without spectators and a minimal crew that wore protective gear.
