High School Musical fans suffered an overwhelming disappointment when High School Musical star Zac Efron took the opportunity to join his classmates in a very special meeting.

The gang – including Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu – have come together (together, everyone) to recreate one of the film’s hit songs as part of Disney’s singalong epic Thursday.

But there was a notable absence in the line-up. The Wild Cats Zac’s heartbeat decided to give a boost to the group’s performance.

Zac, 32, instead chose to play the reduced role of introducing the cast, but fans were not happy with the decision.

The cast of High School Musical reunited without Zac Efron

He started: “Hi everyone and I hope you are safe and healthy, you are doing the best you can in these unprecedented times.

“It is with great pleasure that I present a musical performance by some of my old friends and new friends. “

He finished his segment: “I hope you enjoy and remember that we are all in the same boat. “

Zac chose to record a video message rather than sing and dance

High School Musical franchise director Kenny Ortega told devastated fans why Zac hadn’t been seen in the videos with the others.

Ortega said no one on the team could get Zac to ask him to film his role.

“We couldn’t get to Zac until late,” Ortega told Deadline.

The school’s first musical film was released in 2006 and Zac snubbed the 10 years of reunion in 2016

“Everyone we contacted was quick – and you will see it in their minds and how they meet from home. They recognize that this is an opportunity to strengthen the spirits for those who join us for the broadcast. “

Ortega added that when he finally contacted Zac, he “took the plunge” to see how he was helping and ended up recording a special introductory message.

This is not the first time that Zac has avoided catching up with his fellow HSM comrades, which has prompted fans to speculate as to the reasons.

Zac and Vanessa became big stars after the film’s release

Zac Efron starred as serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile in 2019

In 2016, he skipped the 10th anniversary special and sent a recorded message instead.

Some fans have suggested that it was because Zac did not sing in the original film because his voice was performed by Drew Seeley.

Earlier this week, when Zac and Gabriella’s ex-girlfriend at her Troy, Vanessa Hudgens shared a screenshot of the cast’s zoom video call, he was also mysteriously absent.

“Why is Zac the only person not to show up?” A fan ranted in the comments.

“Where’s the love of my life Zac Efron? Another asked to know.

“How are you going to have a single without Troy?” Pulled a third.

But in the end, the show continued without Zac playing with Troy.

Thursday evening, Disney welcomed the singular star, who saw Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Michael Buble and Ariana Grande crooning their favorite songs from the movies.
