We are one: a world film festival is produced and organized by Tribeca Enterprises of New York. The event organized by YouTube will feature programming from 20 of the best film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, the Festival Tribeca Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival.
The online festival is scheduled to run from May 29 to June 7, 2020 and will be available on youtube.com/weareone. The free programming, which will not include any advertising, will include feature films, short films, documentaries, music, comedy and roundtables.
At the moment, the organizers are not identifying the specific films that should be screened during the We Are One festival. They said a full schedule will be available in the coming weeks.
Viewers will be invited to donate for the relief of COVID-19, which YouTube and Tribeca say will benefit the World Health Organization and local organizations in regions of the world.
Individual film festivals will organize their own programming tracks. The 20 festivals currently in partnership with We Are One are: the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the International Film Festival de Guadalajara, Macau International Film Festival (IFFAM), Jerusalem Film Festival, Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival , New York Film Festival, San Sebastian International Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Festival Tribeca Film Festival and Venice Film Festival.
One notable festival that is not part of the We Are One event is SXSW – which has previously collaborated with Amazon to release 39 films, short films and series originally scheduled for the 2020 festival in Austin last month. This virtual event, which is also free, starts this week.
“We Are One: A Global Film Festival brings together curators, artists and storytellers to entertain and comfort audiences around the world,” said Jane Rosenthal, director of Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Film Festival, in a prepared statement. “By working with our amazing festival partners and YouTube, we hope everyone has a taste of what makes each festival so unique and appreciates the art and power of cinema.”
To be clear, Google’s special 10-day YouTube streaming event is not intended to replace stand-alone festivals. Amidst the chaos of the coronavirus, the organizers hope to recover what they can from the 2020 film festival circuit. For example, the organizers of the Venice Film Festival have declared that they are still planning to organize some sort of event in person scheduled from September 2 to 12. Meanwhile, TIFF, which also traditionally takes place in September, is preparing for the possibility of a hybrid physical-digital program if necessary.
The France of Cannes remains pending after two postponements. Festival director Thierry Frémaux said Variety earlier this month, hosting a virtual event “would not work.”
In a joint statement on Monday, the President of the Cannes Festival, Pierre Lescure and Frémaux, said: “We are proud to partner with our partner festivals to highlight films and truly extraordinary talents, allowing the public to discover both the nuances of storytelling from around the world and the artistic. personalities of each festival.
Robert Kyncl, YouTube Commercial Director, boasted that the 10-day digital film festival is “an event that has never been done before and we are proud to be home to this fantastic content which is free for fans around the world. “
