White House adviser argues with Dr. Fauci over anti-malaria drug

White House business advisor Peter Navarro is reported to have had a heated dispute with Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House anti-coronavirus task force, on the effectiveness of the antimalarial drug, hydroxychloroquine, against COVID-19 on Saturday.

An anonymous source told Axios that Navarro claimed the drug had “clear therapeutic efficacy” during a meeting in the situation room, prompting Fauci to point out that the counselor did not have reliable data on the question.

” What are you talking about? Fauci asked, according to CNN.

The doctor is quoted as saying that any evidence of the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine was purely anecdotal, a rebuttal that made Navarro furious.

“This is science, not an anecdote,” replied the counselor, who had started to raise his voice.

“There has never been a confrontation in working group meetings like yesterday’s,” the source told Axios.
