Watford General Hospital is managed by the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust

A nursing assistant caring for patients with coronavirus has died.

John Alagos, 24, fell ill and died Friday after working at Watford General Hospital in Hertfordshire.

His mother Gina Gustilo told the BBC that the family was waiting to know if he had tested positive for Covid-19.

The hospital closed to new patients on Saturday due to problems with its oxygen equipment, but has now reopened. She said she guaranteed staff the right level of protection while they were working.

Tracey Carter, chief nurse at the hospital, said, “John was very popular and his colleagues will be greatly missed. “

Ms. Gustilo, who is a mental health nurse at the NHS and lived with her son, said that she had not shown any symptoms of the virus.

However, she said she had been tested, awaited the results and isolated herself.

In a statement released after the death of Mr. Alagos, Ms. Carter added, “Our staff are fully aware of the symptoms of Covid-19 and we would never expect anyone to stay at work if they had these symptoms or were actually sick in any way. .

“We have always kept our staff informed of the latest PPE guidelines to ensure they have the right level of protection for the place where they work. “

The hospital said on Saturday that the decision to declare a critical incident was taken “following a technical problem with our hospital’s oxygen equipment.”

“Safe oxygen levels”

Later that evening, the hospital said the problems had been resolved and lifted the critical incident.

Safe oxygen levels were maintained for the duration of the incident, said the NHS Trust at West Hertfordshire Hospitals, which runs the hospital.

At 5 p.m. Thursday, 29 people died in NHS trust hospitals after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

The trust is responsible for Watford General as well as the Hemel Hempstead and St Albans City hospitals.

Current NHS advice instructs people with coronavirus or suspected symptoms to avoid hospitals and other medical facilities such as pharmacies.
