Van der Poel plans to petition for the start of the Tour de France if the 2020 race continues

Mathieu van der Poel’s season plans are on hold after the postponement of the Olympic Games due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Dutchman said Sporza today, he would consider making his debut on the Tour de France if the race took place and the Alpecin-Fenix team could be invited.

“If the Tour is still organized this year, then maybe we can put pressure on it,” Van der Poel told Sporza.

“I think we would have an exceptional Tour de France chance, with many other types of riders. I would certainly be open to that. “

Alpecin-Fenix was not among the jokers selected by the organizers of the ASO Tour de France. In addition to the 19 WorldTour teams, Arkéa-Samsic, Total-Direct Energie and B&B Hotels-Vital Concept deserve the head start for this year’s race.

Van der Poel entered the season with his eyes firmly focused on the classics before focusing on preparing for the cross country event in Tokyo, postponing his Grand Tour debut for next season. But with the Olympics now in 2021, the Grand Tours are on the table for this season – whatever it sounds like.

“Now we have to adapt, because this Olympic dream has certainly not yet started. Next year, I would normally be mountain biking. “

The Tour de France has not yet been canceled: ASO is giving itself until May 15 to fix a race date. First, the pandemic must be brought under control enough for the authorities to authorize mass gatherings again.

Van der Poel was scheduled to compete in the Tour of Flanders today, but instead competed in an indoor Zwift race.

“And with magnificent weather: 20 degrees and the sun, that’s what I prefer to run. It hurts even more, “he said.

The organizers of the Tour of Flanders have declared that they still intend to hold the race this year if the race is authorized in the fall, but Van der Poel has no concrete plans yet.

“I am waiting for it to be final and then we can rebuild it,” he said.
