UPDATE: Health officials reveal details of COVID-19’s first death in Porter County | Lake County News


Three others in the Region lost their lives due to coronavirus, including two in Lake County and the first in Porter County, according to figures released on Saturday by the Indiana Department of Health , the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and private laboratories.

The first death in Porter County was from a man in Portage Township who had pre-existing medical conditions, said Dr. Maria Stamp, head of the Porter County health department.

The total number of positive cases in Lake County has increased from a hundred, now to 676. A total of 25 people have died from respiratory illness in the county. Porter County has 102 cases, compared to 92. LaPorte County has had no new cases or deaths. The county remains with 31 cases and three deaths, according to state and local health officials.

In the south, Jasper County has one more positive case, which brings its total to 16. Newton County has two other positive cases, which brings its total to nine. Both counties have died.

In the east, St. Joseph’s County now has 186 cases, compared to 165. Another death has been recorded in the county, bringing its total to three.

There are 7,435 positive cases in total in Indiana, with 537 new cases reported. On Saturday, 330 deaths were reported across the state. The Region accounts for approximately 9% of these deaths. A total of 39,215 Hoosiers were tested. State data was current as of Friday noon.
