Nurses can refuse to treat patients if they are not receiving the right protective equipment, their union said yesterday.

In a document sent to members, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) stated that leaving patients without care would go against everything nurses had been trained to do, but that their own safety should not be compromised .

The government has been criticized for providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to health workers. Matt Hancock, the secretary of health, angered the doctors and nurses by suggesting that they used it too easily. He asked them not to abuse the “precious resource” and said that a “Herculean effort” was underway to provide equipment to all front line workers.

In the document released yesterday, the MRC said
