Two other NHS workers died after contracting a coronavirus, including a Welsh nurse who came out of retirement to help with the crisis.

Grandfather Gareth Roberts, 63, has been described as a “much loved and dedicated” member of the health care team working in a number of hospitals around Cardiff, while the highly experienced trauma nurse and orthopedics Julie Omar died while isolating herself.

This comes after Secretary of Health Matt Hancock this morning set the death toll for NHS workers in Britain at 19. It is not clear whether the two are the 20th and 21st members.

Roberts is the second confirmed health worker in Wales to die following a diagnosis of Covid-19 after the death of heart surgeon Jitendra Rathod on Monday.

Married, Mr. Roberts worked for the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, which said he died at nearby Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Omar, a mother of a child, had recently worked as a sister in ward 14 of Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, said the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

In a message to colleagues, the CEO of the Trust, Matthew Hopkins, said the 52-year-old woman would be known to many staff at her Worcester site from her time with the trauma team.

Mr. Hopkins’ message was: “It is with great sadness that I must share with you the sad news that a highly valued member of our nursing team – Julie Omar – has passed away.

“Julie was self-isolated at home after developing symptoms of Covid-19, but unfortunately her condition deteriorated and she died at home yesterday (Friday) morning. “

Adding that she is survived by a husband and an adult daughter, he continued, “Her family has asked us not to share more details at this point and we will of course respect those wishes.”

In a statement, the Cardiff and Vale University Health Boards said of Mr. Roberts: “Gareth had been in our nursing family since the 1980s and worked at all of our hospital sites. “

He added: “Gareth was well known to everyone and was an extremely popular, fun and well-liked person, always greeting everyone with -” Hello Cariade “when he saw them.”

Cariad is the Welsh word for darling or lover – and was a favorite of Gareth.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, son and grandson.
