Five people are reported to be in serious condition after the attack began in a tobacco store in the southeastern town of Romans-sur-Isère.

The cutler would have attacked the manager and two customers before continuing their rampage in the street, according to France Bleu.

The assailant then entered a butcher’s shop and grabbed a second knife, local media said.

The two victims are said to have been customers of the nearby tobacco and butcher shop.

Images of the scene show a heavy police presence after arresting the attacker around 11 am local time near a bakery.

The suspect is a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker who lived near the scene of the attack, according to France Bleu.

Local media also reported that the suspect’s roommate was also arrested.

French officials said local police were working to establish a reason for the attack this morning.

It was initially reported that seven people were injured.

Pierre Jouvet, a local councilor, tweeted: “I learn with sadness and horror of the death of two people following a knife attack in downtown #RomanssurIsere.

“The alleged killer was arrested by the police and the criminal investigation police are seized.

“Currently, seven people are reportedly injured, including four in an emergency. Right now, I’m thinking of them.

“I express my deep solidarity and condolences to the families of the victims. #RomanssurIsere »

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner tweeted: “All my thoughts are with the victims of the # RomansSurIsère attack and their families. The accused was arrested by the @PoliceNationale.

“The DIPJ of Lyon is mobilized, under the authority of Justice, to establish the nature and the circumstances of this heinous act. “
