Trudeau says changes to emergency program will expand eligibility

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says 240,000 people have successfully sought emergency assistance amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the first hours after the federal government opened it this morning.

Only people who celebrated their birthday in the first three months of the year can claim the Canada Emergency Response Benefit today.

The benefit offers payments of $ 500 per week to workers who have lost all of their earnings.

Trudeau says program changes will come soon to offer help to people who have reduced hours but are still working a little.
