Travel inspiration: Lorna Subritzky’s love letter in Paris, France

Ah, Paris. I love you so much. The city of light, the city of love; the city I want to visit since I was 13, sitting in Miss Gavigan’s class and learning to ask in French where the station is, while dreaming of drinking a royal kir on the Champs-Elysées…

So many cultural icons reside within your walls. Admire the Mona Lisa at the Louvre! Channel your Toulouse-Lautrec interior at the Moulin Rouge caberet! Bend down and pull the bell at Notre-Dame! Or climb the world’s most visited paid monument, the tower of Gustave Eiffel, from 276 meters to see Paris from above (swirling accordion music). I love you so much.

• A taste of… Paris, France
• The best view of Paris: forget Eiffel, the Montparnasse tower comes out on top
• Dinner in Paris: be treated like a queen at the Lutetia hotel
• The heart of Paris is burning, another loss in a city that has known many

Alas, almost four decades later, my love is not shared. And not consumed, by the way. I have flirted with other French cities (adorable Avignon, adorable Lyon et al) but nothing – in my head, at least – can compare to passionate Paris. And yet my only meeting (brief, tumultuous, ultimately unsatisfactory) was with Charles de Gaulle Airport. Not one of the greats.

This year (pretty much now, as it happens), I organized a visit to Paris in the spring. Events (and viruses) have plotted against us. But we will meet. We will. I waited so long. I can wait a little longer.

But I probably didn’t need to send this love letter after all. In Desbordes-Valmore’s immortal words, “Between two loving hearts, no need for words” – two loving hearts don’t need words. See you soon, Paris!
